The Hardy-Weinberg principle simulates what occurs in large populations.  There normally is no significant mutations, large genetic drift, large permanent migrations of groups, or non-random mating.  This equation allows you to predict allele frequencies and genotypes of current and future populations, assuming that the population is stable.  If there were mutations or non-random mating, it would be impossible to predict the future allele frequencies accurately without getting a lot of data on the population.

Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium postulates that there would be constant gene pool (the sum of all genes of all the traits of all individual in a population) if all the requirements are meet. Among these requirements are no mutation, random mating, no genetic drift to name a few. This theory however is very hard to achieve since the requirements are very hard.

Hope this helps...
