It's been an  long time since i've done population genetics(highschool).However i CANNOT remember how to differentiate between  p an p^2 for example.

p=frequency of dominant allele
p^2=frequency of homozygous dominant  genotype

how exactly do i know what is the given?

I remember everything else yet this is the missing piece of the puzzle.

The problem has to give you enough information to determine that. It can give you the total number of dominant expressed which would be p^2 + pq and just p in the other part of the equation, or the number of recessive expressed which is only q^2, or just tell you the genotype flat out. It just depends on the problem, but they will have to give you enough information to be able to figure out the values.
