How do you solve a system of linear equations?
Does anyone have an answer to this question, and maybe an example?

Use the distributive property.
Im doing that in school right now too but cant explain it.
We use the CPM math books which has a website www.hotmath.com and it has all the answers to each question in our math book and shows all the steps. Even if your not using the same math book you may want to check it out.

set up a matrix and try to solve by multiplying a contant though the top and adding to get what you need
[1 0] [ x]
[0 1] [ y]

There is acouple ways first is by substitution

x + y =7
2x +3y =18

x = 7 - y so
2(7 - y) + 3y =18
14 - 2y + 3y = 18
14 - 14 -2y + 3y = 18 - 14
y = 4 so
x = 7 - 4 = 3

or you can do it by combining equations

x + y =7
2x +3y =18

multiply the first equation by -2

-2x - 2y = -14
2x +3y =18

add the equations together

2x - 2x - 2y + 3y = -14 + 18
y = 4
substitute the value of y into one of theoriginal equations

x + y = 7
x + 4= 7
x + 4 - 4 = 7 - 4
x = 3

there other ways such as with using matrices and such as well
