If one afternoon Mike Gauthier decides to dig a hole through the earth to China for a game of ping pong, how manycenturies would elapse before he got there if he dug at a rate of 0.400 miles depth per day and the diameter of the earth is1.2700 E 7 m? (1.61 km/mile)

Rate = 0.4 miles per day.
1 mile = 1.61km => 0.4 mile = 1.61 x 0.4 km = 0.644 km
Rate = 0.644 km per day.
Distance to dig = 1.27 x 10^7 m
Time needed: = distance/rate = (1.27 x 10^7 m)/(0.644 km per day)
= 1.97 x 10^4 days
= [ (1.97 x 10^4)/365 ] years = 54 years
= 0.54 centuries, accurate to 2 sig figs.

2. convert km to miles
3. divide miles per day by diameter of earth in miles
