how do you do chemical equations and then balance them?

for ionic compounds and neutralized reactions.

easiest way to learn how to balance equations is by H2O

so we always have O2, never just O alone

and we can have H alone

so if we want to make water we get

H + O2 = H20

now there's a problem,
we have one H on the left but 2 on the right
and only 1 O on the right but we have 2 on the left

so here's where the balancing comes in.

here's what it should look like balanced:

4H + O2 = 2(H2O)

we multiplied the right by 2 so that the O becomes balanced
and we needed to multiply the H on the left by 4 because 2(H2) = H4
