Why is blood clotting abnormal in patients with vitamin K deficiency?

Vitamin K is part of the coagulation cascade, a series of chemical/biological events that occur at the site of a blood clot. Vitamin K is found in many foods (plant-form of K, called K1) and is made by bacteria that live in your colon (K2). A deficiency of this vitamin will prolong your clotting time (length of time it takes to make an effective clot at the site of a bleed). Liver disease, and certain anti-coagulant medications, can create vitamin K deficiency that would be treated by taking additional vitamin K supplements.

I had problems with a vitamin K deficiency and was later found to be caused at least in part to a bleeding disorder called VonWillebrands disease.Similar to hemophilia but affects both men and women and most noticeable in women during their cycles( how mine was caught)
