In Tay-Sachs disease, a lipid-digesting enzyme is missing within the lysosome - probably due to a lack of gene or mutated gene. As a result, the brain cells become impaired by an accumulation of lipids. Lysosomal diseases are often fatal in early childhood, leading to death or mental retardation.
