oxytocin travels through the bloodstream. because it is a protein hormon, it cannot cross the membrane of a cell. therefore, it must bind to G protein receptors at the surface of the cell and this causes the signal to be transduced inside a cell.

Remember that words ending with -in are many times hormones, so they travel through the bloodstream and then stimulate a protein receptor on the cell membranes to exert their influence.
