Plants need to minimize water loss while maximizing carbon dioxide intake. How are these conflicting needs met in the structure of a plant leaf?

The cuticle acts as a waterproof barrier at the leaf surface: guard cells and stomata regulate the intake of carbon dioxide as well as the loss of water vapor; and leaf shape can act to reduce water loss, if the surface area is reduced.
