When part of the kidneys is damaged, proteins and even blood cells may appear in the urine.

Small proteins may naturally cross over the fenestrated glomerular capillaries but red blood cells should never cross the glomerular membrane.  If there are RBCs and protein it is indicative of glomerular breakdown, i.e. kidney failure
