I am in 8th grade science and I have a rather difficult homework assignment in which I have to calculate the number of protons, electrons and neutrons in an element. How do I do that? Please explain it to me in plain English, I am still in middle school. Thanks! Slight Smile

Protons = Atomic Number, each element increments in one
Neutron = Atomic mass-Atomic Number
Electrons=# of protons

see to find the no. of protons and neutrons, you need to have two things at least:
Atomic Number
Mass Number

Atomic Number directly gives you the no. of protons and Mass Number gives you the no. of protons+neutrons. to find the no. of neutrons, just subtract atomic no. from mass no.

to know the atomic and mass numbers, you need to refer to the periodic table. there's no other easier way to know the no. of protons and neutrons.
