My understanding is that atoms have the same number of protons and neutrons as electrons so my question is how do they (or do they) travel from one nuclei to another?

Protons and neutrons don't move, only the electrons do, and when that happens they have a different charge. Atoms don't necessarily have to have the same number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. They can differ to many different isotopes. For example carbon6, 7, and 8 all have the same number of protons, and different numbers of neutrons with either equal electrons to the neutrons or a different amount. Hopefully that makes sense.
