like buses, active transport takes energy, although your cells use ATP, and buses use diesel or natural gas

Active transport in cells is when molecules are imported and exported from the cell by transport proteins. These proteins use ATP as energy to transport the molecules against a gradient. An example is the protein that pumps H+ ions into the intermembrane space of the mitochondria in respiration. To compare these to a bus system the molecules being transfered are people. The transport protein is the bus and the ATP is the gas that fuels the bus. In a hilly area the bus uses a lot of gas to move people uphill. In the cell a lot of ATP is used to pump molecules against the diffusion gradient.
