Positive gene regulation is when a regulatory protein (an activator in this case) facilitates the binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter. An example of this catabolite activator protein and its substrate cAMP which binds to DNA and stimulates transcription of a gene by opening up the double helix structure.

The trp operon is considered repressible as the operon is on, but is "turned off" in the presence of tryptophan; here, tryptophan acts as a corepressor by activating the repressor and preventing transcription.
