I've got a multiple choice question here, but I'm not sure which one it is. If anyone could tell me which one it is and WHY, it would be very appreciated Slight Smile

a) synthesis reaction
b) decomposition reaction
c) single displacement reaction
d) double displacement reaction

d) Let's say you mix together AgNO3 and NaCl.
AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) Rightwards Arrow NaNO3(aq) + AgCl(s)

AgCl is the precipitate. It's double displacement because the two metals silver and sodium exchanged bonds and switched places.

double displacement known as precipitate reaction

double displacement ( a.k.a replacement) reaction. Will always MOST LIKELY form a precipitate except for a few other rxn's such as neutralization reactions where they form salts. I would suggest working the problem out like the above poster did already for you.

D

Double displacement= exchange of ions (anions or cations...doesn't matter it all happens!) and your product will more than likely have a gas or a precipitate compound.
