2 ways. One is by destructive distillation of saw dust. From it we get pyroligneous acid. By fractional distillation, at 64.5 degrees, methanol boils out.
The other method is by water gas, or CO + H2.
CO+2H2--->CH3-OH
Condition is ZnO + Cr2O3 catalyst. Also temperature needs to be 200 degrees  celsius and pressure 100 atm.

Basically its reduction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen. A mixture of CO and hydrogen called synthesis gas is manufactured from an oil based feedstock or natural gas and this is passed over a catalyst to give methanol.

Methane from natural gas or coal is mixed with steam under high temperature and with a nickel catalyst produces carbon monoxide and hydrogen. These gases are then mixed with a second catalyst of copper,zinc and alumina to produce methanol.
Methanol is a natural byproduct of anaerobic bacteria and can be captured by modern waste treatment plants.
