Huh? Br2 or HBr is bromination is this 1/2 of a longer question? If not no purpose. Please clarify.

Most chemistry reactions utilize nitrogen gas purely as an inert atmosphere. That is, it's there to keep normal "air" out, and in particular keep out either moisture (water vapor in the air) or oxygen, as a number of reactions are sensitive to one or both.  In the case of bromination of alkene (I'm assuming you mean reaction with Br2, as opposed to hydrobromination with HBr), the main desire is to keep out moisture/water, which could potentially lead to side products/reactions.
