An alpha-hemolytic, catalase-negative, gram-positive diplococcus was isolated from the expectorated sputum of a 79-year-old female admitted with pneumonia. The umbilicated colony was tested against optochin and provided a zone of inhibition equal to 18 mm. The organism was screened for penicillin resistance. The oxacillin disk diffusion result equaled 16 mm. The organism should
a.   be reported as a penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae.
b.   be reported as a penicillin-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae.
c.   not be reported because it is a viridans Streptococcus.
d.   be retested against penicillin using an MIC method.
