Which field is better to get into - mechanical or sustainable engineering?  I want to learn how (renewable) energy systems work and try to come up with new ideas/concepts.  The sustainable engineering program will teach me exactly what I need to know, but is it too specific? Would mechanical still be able to teach me what I need to know, while giving me a broader range of knowledge?

I haven't learnt much specifically on renewable energy systems in my mechanical degree, but I have learn a LOT of thermodynamics and that is very relevant. I would consider mechanical. Also manufacturing and several design classes which are also both relevant. Sustainable sounds a lot like our environmental engineering course, which isn't too bad, but I don't think you would learn how to design or build these concepts. Good luck with your goals.
