A deuterium nucleus contains a neutron and a proton.  These are held together by the strong nuclear force, which is the only force acting between these 2 particles.

In He-4, there are 2 neutrons and 2 protons; the electromagnetic repulsion between th positive protons is balanced by the  strong nuclear force attracting all the particles t each other.
