Without meiotic reduction to half the gamete would have the same number of chromosomes. Joining two of these gametes would then double the next generations number of chromosomes.

Creature with 2n chromosomes -> gamete with 2n chromosomes instead of going through meiosis to produce a gamete with n chromosomes

2n gamete + 2n gamete => 4n zygote


Meiosis halves the number of chromosomes so merging gametes recombines and restores a full complement of the genome in duplicate.
n gamete + n gamete => 2n zygote
