A restaurant chain has sold over 80 billion hamburgers. A hamburger is about one-half inch thick. If the moon is 240,000 miles away, what percent of the distance to the moon is the height of a stack of 80 billion hamburgers?

Nice easy question.  Convert either the inches to miles or miles to inches so both amounts are in the same length.  Then you can tell if the hamburgers are taller than the 240,000 miles, it calls for comparison.  Then divide the hamburger height by the moon distance.  The answer will need to have the decimal moved two places left to make it a percentage.

so you have 80 billion hamburgers. Multiply by 1/2 to get the number of inches this stack would measure:

 40,000,000,000 inches

 However, you need to get this measurement in miles in order to be able to compare it to the distance to the moon. You must convert inches to miles, so;

40,000,000,000 inches*(1 foot/12 inches)*(1 mile/5280 feet) = 631313 miles

Divide by the amount of inches per feet, and divide by the amount of feet per mile

to get the percent you divide this value by the distance to the moon and multiply by 100

(631313/240000)*100 = 263 %
