Homeotic genes are genes that regulate the development of anatomical structures in various
organisms such as insects, mammals, and plants. Explain what makes homeotic genes to be particularly helpful in mapping a human genome. Using a birth and death of genes paradigm, explain how one copy of an ancestral homeotic gene can give rise to multiple related genes in this organism’s evolutionary successors. What kind of defects would you expect if an animal were lacking a homeotic gene?
