I'm prescribed Ativan 0.5 to 1.0 milligrams per day for Anxiety. The way I've handled anxiety in the past is usually having a drink (nothing crazy, just a drink or two at most). If I start the Ativan and stop the alcohol, will the Ativan not have an affect on me? I heard that benzos and alcohol both do something to the Gaba in your brain...I hope my brain isn't "used" to having the Gaba lowered or whatever by the alcohol.

Yes, benzos and alcohol do both have an effect on GABA, but by different mechanisms. Long-term alcohol use does affect the GABA system, but benzos help that and are used in alcohol withdrawal. They should be fine for your anxiety. Just make sure you do stop the alcohol, because the combination can really slow your breathing down.
