are the Y shaped antibodies just released into the blood to inhibit foreign bodies or do they stay on the surface of the B-cell and act inhibit the foreign bodies from there?

I was curious about your question so I pulled out my old Human Phis textbook. B-lymphocyes are transformed into plasma cells which secrete antibodies. So they are released.

they are released from the B lymphocytes into the circulation to neutralize or precipitate the antigen forming an antigen-antibody complex. the complex form will then activate complement via the classical pathway to finalize the destruction of the antigen
