I know the "phyt" is plant... (Pretty sure that's not the whole root... But it's good enough for me right now), so what's "bry"?

A bryophyte is one of the first types of plants. They dont have vascular tissue to hold them up so they lay on the ground (like mosses). I think the prefix Bryo means Moss... i think it is from Bryon (moss) a greek word.

The dictionary meaning is as follows=

pref.= Means prefix
Moss: bryology.

[New Latin, from Greek bruon, moss, from bruein, to swell, teem.]
So the word 'Bryo-' has its root in greek 'bruon ' meaning Moss.

- phyte means =

suff.= suffix
A plant with a specified character or habitat for example  halophyte, mesophyte , hydrophyte etc.

[From Greek phuton, plant, from phuein, to make grow.]

phuton in greek means plants.
