•   Have you ever participated in a special event fundraiser such as a run, a golf tournament, or an art auction? What were the personal benefits of your participation? In addition to the money raised, what are the benefits for a nonprofit of holding a special event?

•   Based on your reading, in what circumstances are these tactics appropriate for an organization?

•   How do you successfully plan for and implement these types of tactics?

•   How heavily does the organization you are studying appear to depend on such events?

I recently participated in a run event organized by St. John’s Hospital Foundation in order to raise funds for children suffering from cardiac related diseases. The event was well organized and participants turned out in large numbers to support the event. The organizers had also managed to secure support from other corporates and therefore had different events in the run, one specifically set aside for the corporates. At the end of the day, the event was a great success and a lot of money was raised towards the initiative. Besides the money raised, the run managed to sensitize the public on better nutritional habits to avoid cardiac illnesses in children, how to manage such diseases and also create a better relationship between the health sector, the general public and the corporate world. Different corporates were also given an opportunity to showcase their humanitarian face and their support for community affairs.

This tactic is appropriate for organizations when they are trying to engage in events that involve giving back to the community, when trying to improve their public image and also when trying to raise money for huge community based projects. The technique helps to create awareness among the public on the various services or products that the organization deals with. To successfully plan and implement these events, the organization must engage stakeholders from the public, the government and the corporate world. Support from all these stakeholders is crucial for the success of the event.

St. John’s Hospital organizes depends on this event to raise funds towards supporting children supporting from heart related illnesses. The event is held annually and this is where different corporates are given an opportunity to come in and support the health and well-being of the community.   By contributing and participating in the run, St. John’s Hospital and the participating corporations get an opportunity to meet their customers and advertise their products.
