when you or an animal breaths either one in it takes the place of oxygen.

We need oxygen in order to survive. Plus these 2 also poison us from the inside out. So its kind of like a double hex.

Carbon monoxide is life-threatening to humans and other aerobic forms of life, as inhaling even relatively small amounts of it can lead to hypoxic injury, neurological damage, and possibly death.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.  Due to human activities such as the combustion of fossil fuels and deforestation, and the increased release of CO2 from the oceans due to the increase in the Earth's temperature, the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased.
Carbon dioxide concentrations exceeding 4% are immediately dangerous to life and health and can cause blackdamp (mixture of unbreathable gases) in miners who are exposed over a period of years

Carbon dioxide is NOT poisonous to life, in fact it's necessary because plants use it for respiration.
However carbon monoxide is poisonous. This is because in your blood are red blood cells. Normally, when you breathe in, oxygen attaches itself to these red blood cells and is taken around the body. However if you breathe in any carbon monoxide it attaches to the red blood cell in place of oxygen. The carbon monoxide molecule never comes off until the cell dies. Therefore if you breathe in too much CO there is no room for oxygen and you become asphyxiated.
