Showing work:

Yuo need to find all the prime factors of both numbers:

12 = 2*2*3
54 = 2*3*3*3

take out what they have in common: 2*3

2*3 = 6, your greatest common factor!

12=>1+2=3

54=>4+5=9

joint divisor 12 and 54 is onlt 3

Get their prime factorization

12 = 2 x 2 x 3

54 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 3

Next, get common factors and multiply

2 x 3 = 6

Therefore, the Greatest common factor of 12 and 54 is 6

Euclid's algorithm.  See it in action here:
54 - 12 = 42
42 - 12 = 30
30 - 12 = 18
18 - 12 = 6

6 divides 12 and 6 divides 54.  We are done.

another way is to decompose the numbers to prime factors:
12 = 2 * 6 = 2 * 2 * 3
54 = 2 * 27 = 2 * 3 * 3 * 3

Now find the innersection of the two multisets.  The result will have one 2, since there is only one 2 in 54.  It will also have one 3, since 12 has only one 3.  We are done.
