This is my recent experience to a dentist.  I got a quote for deep cleaning + antibiotics, which cost $1050 WITH dental insurance.  Of course it's different from the cost from the insurance provider that we found they put some extra drug in that's not covered.  That said, if I want to not do the antibiotics (which I thought was optional as I have no symptoms/pain), they don't want to do the deep cleaning and want me to see a gum specialist instead.   Another alternative is to have dental cleaning every 3 months (that's what I was told) to keep it clean.    My quick Google research on "Evidence based dentistry" didn't support any of these.

Now, does it sounds like a scam to you?

Most deep cleanings, called scaling, do not cost nearly this much. Depending on the area of the country, a deep scaling can cost between $50 and $150 per session. Call your local dental association or get a recommendation from friends for another dentist. It sounds like you have periodontosis which is why they are doing the scaling and the antibiotics. You should start using baking soda and rinsing with peroxide. This is the most effective way to treat the bacteria that attacked your gums, after the deep scaling, according to research. Good luck to you.
