we did a light absorption lab using a spectrophotometer, and certain solutions will absorb at certain colors or wavelengths.  I'm just not sure why a solution would do so at different points at the same time. thanks.

certain solutions will absorb at certain colors or wavelengths because they need only that wavelength of photons to get excited. There may be photons corresponding  to different wavelengths but they will absorb only those wavelengths that are needed for the electron excitations in their atoms.
But there will be only one particular wavelength at which maximum absorbance can occur
