Surely all would line up facing north? It's something to do with -1/2 and +1/2 i think...
And can someone explain the idea of electrons generating a secondary field in response to a surrounding magnetic field?
Thanks for that answer, now does anyone know the first question? I don't understand how a nucleus which is meant to have magnetic poles would line up antiparallel to a magnetic field?

the idea of electrons generating a secondary field in response to a surrounding magnetic field is related to the laws of mutual inductance.

example: if one wire has a current running in it, then it will produce a magnetic field.
then if a second wire is placed inside the field of the first wire, then by the laws of  mutual indectance, the field of the first wire induces a field in to the second wire which then causes the current to flow in the second wire.
