Gravity only acts in the vertical direction.

1) None
2) It accelerates the pojectile down.

1.  The force of gravity acts vertically down only.

2.  Vy = Uy - gT; where Uy is the initial vertical speed, Vy is the vertical speed at time T since the shot, and g is the gravity field (acceleration due to gravity force).

As you can see, the current vertical speed, Vy, is in part determined by the gravity field.  g over time can slow down the vertical speed when Uy is upward, can increase it when Uy is negative, and can reverse the current speed Vy from up to down when Uy is up.
