Foot is a measure of length.
Square foot is a measure of area, and is the length (in feet) multiplied by the width (also in feet), which produces the area (in square feet).

A foot is the width of the material which could be any amount of feet in length.  A square foot is just that - a foot by a foot, regardless of length of material.  For example, if you are buying carpet you need to be aware of costing, as square foot will of course work out a bit more.  Hope I have made this simple for you.

foot is unit of length
squared foot is unit of area.
tip:
squared foot = 1 (foot * foot)

Area of a square (side = 1 foot)
Area = side * side
Area = (1 foot) * (1 foot)
area = 1 (foot * foot)
area = 1 (squared foot)
