A linear foot is a measure of distance along a straight line, like a tape measure. A square foot is a measure of the area taken up by a square with 1 foot long sides.

A square foot measures area - a linear foot measures distance.

Linear foot = 12"
Square foot = 144" (12"L x 12"W)

A linear foot is a measure of length.

A square foot is a measure of area; namely a square whose sides are each 1 foot.

A square foot is a square, where each of the 4 sides is 1 foot long, or any region which has the same area as that square. A square foot refers to the area or amount of space inside that square.

A linear foot is a line segment (like a piece of string) that is on foot long.  It could apply to a curved distance of the same length also.  A linear foot measures a distance (rather than an area).
