With aerobic conditions, a cell can produce energy normally using oxygen as an electron acceptor at the end of the electron transport chain. But in anaerobic conditions where no oxygen is available, a cell must resort to using sulfur as it's electron acceptor (It is the next element in after oxygen in group 16). Ferrous ions work well too. Overall, sulfur and ferrous ions can be used instead of oxygen to complete their energy-making cycles if no oxygen is available.
