The hypothalamus, a component of the diencephalon, is affected by ecstasy. The hypothalamus is a collection of nuclei controlling body temperature, and other functions on which our survival depends, such as hunger and thirst. In addition to body temperature regulation, the hypothalamus also regulates much of the sleep/wake cycle and it produces two hormones, antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin.
