i heard some students won a science contest for using oyster shells to clean up water, what was their procedure?
Further research told me that calcium carbonate needs to be heated in a 750 degrees celsius nitrogen-rich atmosphere to be able to clean up water. Is there another alternative to heating it? can't we just use oyster shells, crush them, then place them in water to clean phosphate?

Here is an article about some preparations of oyster shells for water purification: http://projetoconchas.ufsc.br/upload/arquivos/1197924433.PDF
Check out the methods, and see if that helps.
