Normally, progesterone is necessary to maintain pregnancy, and is secreted by the corpus luteum until the third month of pregnancy. However, if pregnancy prevention is desired, the elevated levels of progesterone that come from the hormonal birth control will prevent ovulation. Progesterone inhibits the release of gonadotropins and will continue to do this as long as progesterone injections are provided at proper intervals.
