Cultural Diversity around the World, "China: Changing Sentiment About the Elderly," describes a uniquely Chinese strategy of obligating young people to care for their aged parents as a part of obtaining a marriage license. Is such a strategy likely to be adopted in the United States? Why or why not?

This strategy involves a formal, contractual relationship between parents and children, a concept that deviates considerably from the usual American concept of the parent-child relationship. On the other hand, parents are legally obligated to care for their children, so the reverse could conceivably become acceptable. If the obligation was required by young people in order to receive a marriage license, it is possible there would be more common-law relationships by some children who wanted to escape this future responsibility. But children who feel they have a moral obligation to care for parents do not need a contract.
