In early societies, education consisted of informal education and was synonymous with acculturation. Children learned what was necessary to get along in life. When some societies developed a sufficient surplus, a separate institution was developed to educate individuals. Some people devoted themselves to teaching and those individuals who had leisure time were students. Education was no longer informal acculturation, but became a society's formal system of teaching knowledge, values, and skills. This instruction was intended to develop the mind rather than only survival skills. Formal education, however, remained limited to those who had the leisure to pursue it until industrialization. The new machinery and new types of jobs produced a general need for individuals to be able to read, to write, and to do mathematics. Because of this demand, the need for universal education emerged.
