Children from wealthy families go to expensive, exclusive, private preschools, elementary schools, and high schools. They also attend expensive, elite universities and professional schools. Children from poor families may begin formal education in kindergarten. They attend public schools that are poorly funded and maintained. The conditions of their high schools may be so chaotic that learning there is difficult. Only the brightest and most highly motivated poor children go to college. These children can afford to attend only inexpensive, low prestige, public colleges and universities.
