George Farkas found that girls and Asian Americans received higher grades than did other students, despite the fact that they had the same test scores. Farkas attributed the higher grades to the greater ability of girls and Asian Americans to signal to their teachers that they are good students. Why do many students refrain from sending such signals, even if they know their grades would improve if they did?
