Figure 18.5, " U.S. Churches: Gains and Losses in Ten Years," shows that more traditional denominations such as Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Methodist have lost membership while the Roman Catholic church has gained in membership by 12 percent. What is a possible explanation for this increase in Roman Catholicism while other mainstream churches are losing members?

I'm no expert, but with advent of the internet and other mass media, the Pope has garnered a lot of attention in the last decade. Other denominations don't have such a figurehead to lead their masses so 'Christians' in general may see him as the figurehead of Christianity rather than just Catholicism.
