Identify the independent variable and the dependent variable in the following empirical question. Which is the better method of remembering information for an exam: studying in which you cram for the test or studying in which you space out your study sessions over time?

Your independent variable is what is being directly manipulated by the researcher. In this case it would be your study method. Your dependent variable is dependent on the independent variable. If your study is sound, your dependent variable will change as your independent variable changes. So, your dependent variable would be, in this case, the grade on your exam!
