what is in the boil buffer that helps "break open" the bacterial cells??

Never heard of "boil buffer" before. However, I do know that TES buffer is a detergent that can be used to break open a cell. It is made up of Tris, EDTA and NaCl. Its primary purpose to reduce the acidity of a solution. It is pH stable and is also isotonic.
