I know how to solve equations with just one variable, but I am a little confused on how to solve one with two variables.
I would as the teacher, but she has not patience. She yells if the class does not understand something.

If someone could go over the equation step-by-step, it would be very helpful.

You simply combine like terms.

-4a + -2a = -6a

Then combine 5-9 which equals -4

Now you have...

-4-6a=44

You should be able to solve this from this point!

Add the like terms together.

-4a + -2a = -6a

5 + -9 = -4

thus resulting in,

-6a - 4 = 48

a = -8

k i just covered this!
-4a+5-2a-9=44
+2a   +2a-we do this cause the oppisite of -2a is +2a
so nows its
-2a+5-9=44
       -4
-2a-4=44
     +4  +4
-2a=48/-2=
a=-24 :0)

ALSO
 tell your parents about this teacher, they can go the princable and have a word with her and him/her  and you could see a change in the teacher! Thats what my mum did! ^_^
sorry this done in the head the steps are right but the #s aren't sorry!!!

combine like terms -4a-2a=-6a so now -6a+5-9=44
next combine 5-9=-4 so now the equation is -6a-4=44
then isolate the -6a so move the -4 or 44 + 4 = 48
then divide both sides by -6
so you see this
a=48/(-6) or
a=-8

then check your answer by plugging  in the -8 into the equation
