A patient being prepared for surgery is scheduled for an electrocardiogram. The nurse realizes this diagnostic test is being done because it is
1. routine for all patients having general anesthesia.
2. used to diagnose preexisting cardiac disease.
3. one way to validate laboratory values
4. a predictor of surgical procedure success.

1 -- The electrocardiogram is a commonly performed diagnostic procedure and is considered routine for all patients having general anesthesia. The electrocardiogram might detect preexisting cardiac disease but will not diagnose disease. The electrocardiogram will not validate laboratory values and is not used to predict the success of surgical procedures.
