1 -- Antibiotics are given preoperatively to orthopedic patients to prevent postoperative infections. Antacids increase the gastric pH and reduce the volume of gastric fluid. Antiemetics enhance gastric emptying. Anticholinergics reduce oral and respiratory secretions to decrease the risk of aspiration and vomiting.
