The nurse is reviewing the patient’s current medications as a part of preparation for an elective surgery. Which instruction(s) to the patient are correct?
1. Continue to take your regular steroid medication up to the night before your surgery.
2. You may take your regular herbal supplements up until the day before surgery.
3. Discontinue your antihypertensive medications two days prior to surgery.
4. Stop taking your daily aspirin at least three days prior to surgery.
5. Be certain to continue your regular NSAIDs for your arthritis until the day of surgery.

Rationale 1: Medication administration prior to surgery is reviewed on an individual basis, but typically steroid medications are continued to prevent adrenal crisis from abrupt withdrawal. These medications are given parenterally until the patient is able to take them orally during the perioperative and post operative period.
Rationale 3: Antihypertensive medications should be taken routinely until the day of surgery.
